A little sewing project

So, in the New Year I made the decision (not a resolution) to learn to sew. My mum dug out her old Elna machine, a classic made in Switzerland which has been going since about 1982. It's in perfect condition and a great starter for me.

So I confess I haven't really got into it until now. I found a fantastic material shop in Cambridge, Cally Co. Brilliant little shop with friendly and helpful staff and a lovely selection of cute prints. The shop is also full of inspiration. SO I bought a load of material months back, but it's only now I've making use of it.

The Cath Kidston Sewing book has helped give ideas too, with clear instruction it's a must buy to start you off. It's from that book that I have made my first two projects, a cute heart shaped pin cushion- which I messed up a little but I know what I did wrong which always helps move forward, and I made the needle case in a cute pink flowered print material with sky blue felt. I'm really pleased with this make and they are both proving to be very useful already.

My new project feels a little more adventurous, I'm making a sweet little birdy mobile ready for my new niece/nephew. I found some spotty and contrasting stripy material, so will be fine for boy or girl. I've made the first body in spots and will put stripy wings on, I'll mix the birds up a little. Really pleased with how the first bird is looking, especially with it being small and a funny shape it was quite tricky on the machine. I hope the baby will enjoy it, hopefully my motivation will keep me going to finish it by August!
